Cenozoic grassland expansion
What drove global episodes of C3 and C4 grassland expansion?
The (geologically) recent emergence of C3 and C4 grass-dominated ecosystems, and their apparent stability through time, remain central problems in the geosciences. Understanding the causes of C3 and C4 grassland expansion should help inform the complex dynamics of forest-grassland transitions. My work constrains the role of hydroclimate in grassland expansion using stable isotope data and intermediate complexity climate models, along with Earth System Modeling by colleagues.
